Vibrant Volcanoes

Spring on the Hellmouth!

Details

One might think that a volcanic island could not sustain plant life at all, but one would be wrong. Every year, when spring comes to Hellmouth Island, bringing spring rain and seeds on the wind, the cooler edges of the island turn green with new life, drawing on the fertile deposits of volcanic ash. Most of this vegetation will die quickly, unable to bear the true heat of the island soil, but some…some flourish, until the next eruption.

Draw or write about your character experiencing spring in Keldeep. Are they surprised that plants can grow at all, or do they look forward to this every year?

A Past Best Left Buried

Details

A tropical island, full of black sand beaches perfect for lounging on those hot, sunny days! The travel advertisement's aren't wrong, per se, about the town of Keldeep, just very selective in their wording. The island of Hellmouth is indeed very hot, and ringed by black sand beaches. The heat does not come from the sun, however, which is only able to show itself a minority of the year. Much too often is it hidden by the smoldering rage of the active volcano at the center of the island, for which it is named. Hellmouth does not have the traditional fury of a stereotypical volcano. Instead it is a slow burn where lava flows quietly but constantly, like the nose of a youth sick with a cold. Keldeep's location near the southwestern shore keeps it safe from the rivers and tunnels of churning lava. Whether this is purely luck or a conscious choice of the city's original founders is unclear.

The ambient heat surrounding Keldeep cannot be understated. It is an intensely humid heat that requires much perseverance and exposure to tolerate. Sulfuric smog is almost constantly floating down from Hellmouth's peak, greatly reducing visibility for any who have to travel outside the city's walls. For those born and raised in Keldeep, it is simply the way of life, and so persevere you must. For those who visit or migrate to the island, it is a battle and a struggle every day to acclimate to the volcano's aura.

You are one of those people, here by birth or by choice. Through dusty dirt and cobbled roads you make your way through the fortified city, made so more for protection from the lava instead of any fear of assault. Many safeguards have been put in place to stop or redirect the lava flows, should they come. Thankfully, none of these measures have needed to be tested yet. The buildings around you are squat and sturdy, mostly built from blocks of wood harvested from Keldeep's fireproof forests, as well as stones and even metals. Anywhere metals have been used locally cultivated fabrics have been stretched across them, thick and protective against any burns.

The great bells at the eastern gate begin to toll. Once, twice. Friends return! A party of miners come back from a successful shift in the obsidian tunnels at Hellmouth's base. Faces and gear covered in a layer of smog residue, this particular party has a different air around them. Normally such a crew returns slow and tired from the days toils, as one would expect. This time their steps are more animated. At a longer look, they seem more guarded, more wary. You have enough time to start wondering why when a wave washed over your mind, shivering through your body. You were filled with a sense of concern and malice and dread. It reverberated through your very mana. Looking around, you weren't the only one either.

You join the gathering commotion around the mining party, and see a larger voxibell holding up a small item in the air in front of them, sigil burning bright as they magically lift the object away from themselves. It appeared to be an ornate bell, carved from a light blue stone. It's handle ends in a series of dangerous claws extending outward.

Before you realized you gaze too long at the artifact your vision went dark, and Keldeep dropped away from you. Dark tidings came to you then, and the wave of dread and malice you felt before finally dropped on top of you.

What did your character see or experience in this vision? How do they react coming out of the vision and what do they plan to do with the knowedge they have gained?

In Search of an Adventurer

Details

The window was bright with the light of the midday sun. The clear glass pane drank in the sky’s glow completely, promising an easy, relaxing day. This day was interrupted as a shadow passed over the window, a sharp *tick tick tick tick* following as something rapped agaist the pane. Standing now in your window, perched on the outer ledge, was an aeirbis. A regal white, with midnight blue star patterning across it’s chest. Around it’s neck was a rolled parchment tied by string. It stared right at you with fierce yellow eyes, tapping the glass again. *Tick tick*.

Opening the window the aeirbis suddenly beats it’s large wings, distracting you just long enough to make it’s way inside. It rips the note off it’s neck before making a quick pass of your chamber, eyeing any food, but refusing to take any. It leaps back out of the window almost as soon as it arrived, probably hurrying back to whomever sent it. The note is folded over, sealed by a wax stamped by the sigil of the school of Crystal Sight.

It reads as follows:

“I hope this letter finds you in good spirits! I find myself in a bit of a predicament, and your name has been passed through a few ears to reach my own. I seek adventurers, you see, souls like yourself. A unique exploratory opportunity has presented itself that I cannot pass up, but I need help if my research is to succeed. I can promise you passage to ancient ruins unseen by any who live nor those who preceded them. A daring adventure, and a look into the long forgotten past of Kyvalore. If you would be so kind, could you find me at the Siemion Building Room 236 at the Academy of Crystal Sight? Please bring this letter with you so that there is no question to you belonging on campus.

With kindest regards,

Professor Modeous”

You decide to offer your help to Modeous, and so make your way to the school. Foot traffic is light this time of day. You receive some brief greetings from those you pass by as you make your way from one street to the next. Hanging baskets from lamp posts mark each intersection. In the center of each is carved a magic circle, laid carefully into each cobble brick to emanate a low magical pulse. It keeps the ice from forming in the winter time, and the bricks remain cool even under the hottest sun. Similar circles of various purposes can be found throughout Lanris, built into the architecture to help make life more comfortable in the background without interrupting the town’s image.

Passing from the residential neighborhoods into the commercial district, you start to see the school of Crystal Sight in the distance. Multiple spires of sharp angled tiles mark the hexagon shape of the campus. A large clocktower takes shape in the middle, it’s clock slowly rotating in place so that all of Lanris may utilize it.

You cross through the massive ornamental gate onto the campus of the school. Multiple rows of large buildings tower over you as gaggles of students pass between them. Siemion Building, room 236, right?

Draw or Write about your character exploring the Academy of Crystal Sight to find Modeous. How do they react to the large glass windows, and towering shelves of books? Do they get lost looking for room 236 or do they find it right away? Is this their first time at the academy?

The Great Tree Ceremony
Category: Lynorre
This prompt requires you to have completed Festival of the Great Tree 1 time.

Festival of the Great Tree

Details

The wind carried the sounds of harmonious instruments for miles around. This siren’s call of joy would have attracted you to the Life Tree even if you hadn’t already been on your way. The Festival was in full swing after all. The Life Tree rose before you, even now a holy beacon on the horizon to guide to you it’s heart. It’s massive trunk seemed to touch the sky itself, dozens upon dozens of thick twisting branches spreading from all angles, growing thicker and more frequent the higher the tree went, growing into a multi-hued crown.

While mostly some shade of green, spots of oranges, reds, yellows and other colors besides dot the foliage like stars in the night sky. You can feel the magical presence of the Life Tree throughout your whole being. From the tip of your nose through the length of your tail, in your bones and infused in your soul, it is almost as if the Tree is watching out for you in a mighty vigil.

You flap your wings to gain some altitude. You’re nearing the edge of one island, and the beginning of Lynnore’s main landmass. You pass by groves of fruit trees, fields of crops and blooming flowers, turning more and more into houses the closer you get the the physical and spiritual heart of the Avilli and of Lynnore. The magic on the breeze feels stronger, the activity and murmurings of other Avilli become louder as well.

Passing above the cobbled avenues of the Village of Origin, you reach the edge of the festival. Occupying the vast circle of land, appropriately called the Garden of the Life Tree, the festival is full of activity. Bands and Orchestras play throughout, filling the air with wonderful harmony. The smell of cooked meats and fresh fruit permeate the festival, homemade wares are created and shared while games and activities are available for anyone young and old wanting to stretch their wings and wits. As with the rest of the Avilli who have made the trek, short or far, to be here, you come to enjoy the festival and honor the Life Tree. It was here that the Avilli were born into Kyvalore, right there in the roots of the tree whose shade you take now. It is a time of joy and of peace. Of renewal and connection. This festival only comes once a year, so enjoy it!

Draw or write about your character exploring the festival! What do they find among the other avilli celebrating? Do they enjoy the bustle and crowd and cheers of the busy streets?

Lifeboat for Hire

Details

It was early in the morning as you padded your way through the clean tiled thoroughfare. The Horizon was still casting it's shadow over you as you approached the western gate. A nickname by many for the crenelated defensive wall of Reim, the massive stone bastion ringed the city in it's totality. The only way in or out through carefully guarded gates. A fleet of trained Avilli patrol the skies of Reim day and night, any who attempt entry in this way without proper, prior, authorization is quickly challenged and brought down if necessary. The incline of the road became steeper, and many merchants were sweating as they passed you with their carts of goods from the docks below. Like in many aspects of life, things got harder in Reim the closer you got to it's borders.

It wasn't too much farther past Castercreek Square that you arrived to your destination. Next to the workers sprucing up the large wooden art piece advertising the School of Arcane Lore and Magic was a questboard, tucked in a small alcove surrounded by an almost equally small garden. One advertisement immediately caught your eye, but that was the point. The large paper was smooth and glossy, large enough that it almost completely covered all of the scraps of job postings put there before it.

Being such a brave and noble soul that you are, or maybe just want to prove that you are, you accept this call for aid. Even if the call of passion didn't grab you, the promise of royal rewards is too much to pass up.

Draw or Write about your character accepting the quest and preparing for the journey. What might they expect to see out on the open sea? Or what do they plan on doing with the reward? What do they gather from home before venturing out?

Saltwater Serpents

Storms are not the only peril...

Details

The unpredictable weather of spring makes the ocean a dangerous place. Reim’s fortified walls protect her inhabitants, but the exposed docks see their fare share of damage as spring storms sweep across the ocean, intense but short-lived, like an explosion of rain and wind. But storms do not wear scales, nor do they wield great coils of heavy muscle, crushing boats between sharp ivory teeth. No, this spring has brought something else to Reim, sea serpents driven mad by something deeper in the water. It is not their fault, and yet, the damage is still the same.

Draw or write about your character helping to address the sea serpent attacks. Are they on the front lines, fighting? Are they helping to pull sailors from the water, ready with bandages and spells of healing? Or perhaps they are attempting to research the cause of the attacks?

Take Hold on the Loam

Details

To those who kept their eyes open and their senses keen, Talendor could be a treasure trove of beauty and intrigue. Though it was true life here was harsher and less forgiving, its rewards were well worth it; from stunning oases to breathtaking vistas. The natives know this fact well, and the travellers who manage to survive the harsh conditions and are curious and determined enough to explore the region discover this fact on their own; what appears to be a barren land on the surface hides deep complexities within.

It is here in Talendor where you find a most eccentric character. Dressed in an odd manner of mishmash clothing, bearing a veritable trove of fungi and spores of all kinds, you find him on a street corner inspecting an inconspicuous patch of darkness on the corner of a wall. You reckon he’s wearing far too many clothes for the current heat of Talendor, but he seems perfectly comfortable, at home even, scribbling something down in a book of sorts and muttering to himself. He doesn’t deign to look up at you as you approach, drawn in by whatever he is studying.

As you get closer, your eyes honing in on the dark spot on the corner, you find that it is nothing more than black mould, yet the stranger is excited to encounter it. He looks up at you, eyes twinkling, and lets out a satisfied hum.

“A fellow sommelier of the finer things in life, I see” he mutters happily, his eyes dragged back to his current fixation. Before you can answer, he’s talking again, not lifting his eyes from his precious find.

“This here is a mushroom, you see,” he hastily explains, “now I needn’t explain to a connoisseur like you that mushrooms require two things to grow, two things that we could also use here in Talendor.”

You watch, confused, and your expression must have struck something in him because he huffs loudly, tucking his quill away behind his ear.

Moisture,” he says, exasperated, “and shade. Kyvalorians need moisture and shade, too, and where there’s mushrooms….” his voice trailed off, his eyes hoping that you’d understand what he was getting at.

And you did, you supposed. Which is why you agreed to locate a rare kind of mushroom that required plenty of both, unsure whether you were doing it to supply the town, or to just get a rare specimen to an eccentric fungi super-fan.

Draw or write about your character acquiring information about the spores. Do they ask the locals, or do they choose to peruse the library for information instead? Or, do they take an either more terrifying option; asking the eccentric Voxibell for information, and exposing yourself to an endless seminar on the fungus?

The Sands Do Whisper
The Sands Do Whisper

Details

A rumor has been billowing through the markets of Vitrun like a welcome breeze. Merchants and caravans alike trade information like coin (shards?). It’s always valuable to be in the know. Perhaps you caught wind of the rumor yourself, or perhaps you were ignorant of it until Novir called you to Fighter’s Guild. The messenger assured you that the matter was urgent. It wouldn’t do to delay!

Outside the glass city, the guildmaster lends credibility to the rumor causing a whirlwind within the city. They say there’s an old ruin out in the desert, lost to time. But it doesn’t have to be. The ancient knowledge and treasures held inside its walls, should it stand, would be invaluable. The journey will be perilous, but Novir believes you have what it takes. It wouldn’t hurt to hire a couple of extra swords for the trek– whether your notoriety is earned or your name is unknown, those who only have their ego as a shield wind up buried beneath the sands.

The desert is a cruel and unforgiving place. You’re warned that you’ll need a great many things to make the trip as safe as possible. You’re also warned that no matter how safe you may feel, the dunes around Vitrun are dangerous. It’s best to be prepared. The market has everything you could hope for if you have the funds. You’ll need a sizable amount of water and food, more should you bring others with you. Water alone can not protect you from the baking sun or the things that lurk beneath the sand– you’ll need gear too. The grit you’ll have to provide yourself.

Traversing the Whispering Sands on foot is a death sentence. You’ll also need to procure a sand sled and a team of skitters to give you and your team the best chance of making it to the ruin, should it exist, alive. If you have no skitters of your own or lack experience, a handler may be needed.

Thankfully the merchants of Vitrun have all this and more, though navigating the market and stocking for this perilous task have fallen to you. Take Novir’s advice to heart and try not to get distracted by peddlers hawking their wares. You have a mission, but you’re not the only one.

The rumor has been circulating for days. You better get moving if you want to find the ruins first!

Draw or write about your character preparing to venture out into the Whispering Sands. Do they believe the rumor that’s been going around? Do they take Novir’s warnings seriously and prepare adequately, or do they approach getting ready their own way?

Something wakes beneath the sands

Details

Perhaps they think they’re being sneaky, or perhaps they just want to be left alone, but a local group of sand skitters have taken to simply sleeping through the cool winters of Vitrun. Those unlucky enough to be passing through their hibernation grounds find themselves on uneven footing as the skitters begin to wake and emerge from beneath the sands.
